The GRAND Total.....

As of today, our final day for having collected money for our fundraiser, our grand total is:

$17,348.36!!!!
Mr. Cadet will be coming back to the middle school in May to speak to the students about his work in Haiti and what their contributions have done.  By the end of March, the Restavek Foundation will have opened 11 schools in the area of the capital city, which serve to educate over 3000 children affected by the earthquake.  Our money will be enough to support 5 schools for a year each, with $2348.36 left over for extra needed supplies, food, and tuition costs for students who couldn't otherwise afford it.  The earnings of the LMS community are the equivalent of the annual salaries of 44 Haitian adults--WAY TO GO!!

In an email from the Restavek Foundation, we see their gratitude for all of our hard work:

"Thank you again so very much for all your support!!!
On behalf of Ray & Joan Conn, Desha,  Jill Mairn, & Jean-Robert, I just wanted to again say how much we appreciate Loveland School’s partnership!  Wow- it’s unbelievable actually!
Your generosity and all of Loveland’s is allowing our team on the ground to make an immediate impact in so many children’s lives. Your resources, time, and support is helping us to rebuild a stronger, healthier, Haiti long term and for that we are so truly grateful!

With gratitude,

Elizabeth N. Hendel
Child Sponsorship Coordinator

Last Call!!

After a very successful month of March that has followed our DB tournament, we have collected quite a bit more money for our Hope for Haiti campaign.  We have had some generous individual donors as well as some more groups who have contributed--including the 5th grade student council, who held a "Hop for Haiti" last night and raised $220.25!  Our grand total at this point is: $17,114.28!!  That is $2114.28 over our original goal!!

We are still collecting money through the end of the school day on Wednesday, March 24th and we will then close the account and write the check to the Restavek Foundation.  Mr. Cadet, former Haitian slave, founder of the organization, and speaker at our DB tournament will be coming back in May to speak to our students about Haiti, child slavery, and where the money is going and how it will help to build and maintain schools to give students a future.  We are very, very lucky to have him come to our school--he has been on CNN, Oprah, 60 Minutes, and was personally invited by Bill Clinton to attend a world summit in April on global childhood slavery.

If you, your student, or family are interested in reading his autobiography before he arrives, it is well worth the read and is an inspiring story about a man who has overcome more adversity than one could imagine.  It is called: Restavec; from Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American and can be purchased on the Jean Cadet Restavek Foundation website (all proceeds go to the foundation) or on Amazon.com.  Both places are selling it for $25.00.  *Warning that there are some parts that are very graphic and may need adult support and supervision.*

If you would like to give any final donations to the cause, please send them to Mrs. Pecsok in room 61 by 2:30 on Wednesday!

Thank you again for all that you have done to help!!!

A Successful Week!

Thanks to many generous donations this week--including those from the 8th grade band concert where they played "A Song of Hope" and dedicated it to the Haitians--we have a new total: $16,837.40!!  We are only $162.60 away from $17,000!!  That is OUTSTANDING!  Remember that we are collecting donations through Wednesday, March 24th....

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

The number becomes more impressive by the day!

Believe it or not, we STILL have donations coming in regularly!  We've had piggy banks donated, grandparents of LMS students sending donations, and funds are still coming in from various community service projects students have implemented!  We continue to be so proud of this community and all it has done to support the future education of Haitian children.  The new total as of today is: $16,284.40!!  We will be accepting donations through Wednesday, March 24th.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Pecsok: pecsokhi@lovelandschools.org.

Extension of the Deadline....ALL BECAUSE OF 5TH GRADE GENEROSITY!!

We will be extending our bank account deadline even further....we will not be closing it until Wednesday, March 24th due to the fact that the 5th graders will be having a dance on March 18th called "Hop for Haiti!"  Admission will be $2.00 and it is for 5th grade only.  They would like to donate the proceeds raised to the Restavek Foundation! :)

Also, our most recent total is:  $16,030.10!!  This is outstanding!  Keep those donations coming!!

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

And still climbing....

$16,016.10!!  Remember you can still donate through next Wednesday, March 10th at any 5/3rd bank location or at LMS.  Please make checks payable to: LMS French Class.

Mr. Jean-Robert Cadet will be returning to speak at Loveland Middle School in May.  We will present him with an over-sized The Price is Right! style check with our total amount!  Please stay tuned for details about his presentation. :)

We made it to Cincinnati.com!!  Visit the link:  Loveland students "true citizens of the world"

*As a side note:  If you donated a baked good item for our concessions the night of the DB tournament, and it was in a Tupperware or on a decorative plate, please have your child pick up the container or plate from Mrs. Pecsok's room 61 ASAP.  We have several unclaimed containers that need to be returned to their homes! :)

We have had some more generous donations since the DB tournament....so our total is now up to $15,836.60!!  Will we make $16,000??  Will we be able to raise another $2000 by the 10th to support a 6th school??

The LMS French Class account will remain open through Wednesday, March 10th.  If you still would like to donate, you may bring money to Mrs. Pecsok's classroom (61) or directly to any 5/3rd Bank location in the city.  Checks may be made out to: LMS French Class.  On the 10th, we will close the account and donate all funds to the Jean Cadet Restavek Foundation.

We will be leaving the account open at 5/3rd bank through Wednesday, March 10th.  We continue to encourage community members and students to contribute to the fund so that we can continue to watch it climb before donating it to the Restavek Foundation!  Please feel free to drop by the Middle School to drop off a donation (checks made out to: LMS French Class) or any 5/3rd bank location.

We are blown away by your generosity and kindness!!

Why we are doing this work...its impact:

Mr. Cadet, of the Jean Cadet Restavek Foundation, updates his tumblr regularly as he is helping Haitian children (many of them slaves) in the aftermath of the earthquake.  A recent entry gives us direct perspective into the lives of these enslaved children, as well as the impact that education can have on them to change their lives completely.  In the midst of these snowy, grey days of February, where you may be finding it challenging to rally, please consider this entry and stay with us in the fight to bring schools and a future to these children.  If you would like to read more beyond the entry below, the tumblr address is:  http://restavekfreedom.tumblr.com/

Sincerely,

Hillary Pecsok

Latest update from Jean-Robert Cadet:

“More than two weeks after the earthquake, several hundred people are still camping in the Nazarene grounds where we have our office.  Some have called their friends and relatives who were at other camps to come and join them.  I spoke to 35-year-old Marjorie who arrived here three days ago from Place Boyer,  a  tent city in Petion-Ville. “Here, the facilities are adequate.  I shower and get two meals a day,” said Marjorie, smiling. When I asked her about living conditions at Place Boyer, she said that two portable toilets cannot meet the needs of  thousands.
“People defecated in plastic bags, and gave them to children to throw away, and there’s no shower,” she said.
“Are the children boys or girls?” I asked.
“They are mostly girls.”
I asked Marjorie if she thought the children were in servitude.
“Yes,  they are.”
“How do you know?”
“I used to be a restavek.”
“How did you become a restavek?”
“When I was four, my mother worked as a live-in-domestic, so she handed me to my godmother.  The moment I walked into her home,  she treated as a restavek.  As I got older, I cooked, fetched water, walked her children to school and scrubbed laundry. When the children hit me, I was not allowed to defend myself. Everyone in the family abused me.”
“Did they send you to school?”  She smiled, “no, they never did, not even for one day.” Since Marjorie is very articulate for a person who spent her childhood in servitude, I became interested in her story, which resembles my own.
“How did you get out of servitude?”
“It was not easy.  When I was 18 years old, my mother came to get me. My godmother demanded that my mother reimburse her for all the years she fed me. It was like my mother purchased me from my godmother.  Then my mother gave me to another family that sent me to school regularly. I was treated well, but not like pitit kay (a child of the house).  I finished secondary school when I was 30 years old.  Now I am a lab technician, working for a doctor. The  woman that treated me well, is now 83 years-old and living in Miami. Her name is Clemence. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her kindness,” said Marjorie..."

  • A special THANK YOU also goes out to the anonymous donor who came to LMS with three 5/3rd envelopes from your family to donate to our cause--that was extraordinary and much appreciated.  Your generosity was noted by all the LMS French students.
  • Due to a little bit of chaos in regards to making dodgeball teams, we have extended the LMS deadline, and have opened the invitation for 6th graders from LIS to create teams to play in the competition.  Registration forms will continue to be available at the LMS circle desk, as well as at the LIS circle desk and in the LIS office.  They are YELLOW and registration rules are printed on the back.  Due to the upcoming weather forecast, we will make all registration for LMS and LIS due by 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 11th.  Each player must pay $10, & all teams have 10 players.  Therefore, with your registration form, you must turn in $100 total to hold your spot in the competition.  If you are an LMS student, please bring your registration form and money directly to Mrs. Pecsok in room 61 and if you are an LIS student, please take your form and $100 to the LIS office.  Mrs. Pecsok will venture down each day to pick them up!
  • We encourage all Loveland community members to keep doing random acts of community service and kindness to earn money to donate to our cause.  There are some great ideas for earning money this weekend among LMS students...how about selling hot chocolate or shoveling snow??  Mother nature has given us the PERFECT way to earn money to contribute to the Haiti fund!
We have 23 more days to meet our $15,000 goal to support 5 Haitian schools for a year....and we only have $9887.29 more to go...WE CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A donation from the furthest away so far....Mrs. Pecsok's childhood friend, Joanna, sent a donation from Porvenir, Chile, which is at the very southern tip of Chile in the Tierra del Fuego.  Joanna is trilingual and one of her languages is French.  She so admired the students of Loveland Middle School that she wanted to make a donation of her own!  If you would like to learn more about Porvenir (at the end of the earth!), you can check out Joanna's blog:   at http://www.inthelandoffire.blogspot.com/  Thank you, Joanna, for supporting us from so far away!!

Registration for the Dodgeball Tournament (Thursday, February 25th @ 6:30 p.m.) will begin tomorrow, Monday, February 1st and will be due this Friday, February 5th by 2:30 p.m.  Teams must have 10 members each, and ALL teams must be COED (a minimum of a 60/40).  Players must pay $10 each, with a total of $100 per team.  All money must be handed in by Friday with the registration--if you turn in a team registration without payment for all players, it will not hold your spot.  We will accept teams from the Middle School (7th and 8th grades) on a first-come, first-served basis, and we have room for up to 50 total teams. Registration papers will be at the LMS circle desk for pick-up.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Pecsok in room 61 or by email at: pecsokhi@lovelandschools.org.  Good luck!

You Tube Account & Channel!

Thanks to 7th grader, Zach Simone, we now have an official You Tube account and channel!  It is:  www.youtube.com/WeHelpHaiti.  If you email your commercials to Madame Pecsok, we'll get them on our channel!  Thank you, Zach, for setting this up!

A lot of updates...

Seems like we've had way too many updates in the past few days! That's always a good sign. :D

First, we would like to tell you about two sixth grade students, Kaylee and Nadra, who generously donated everything from their piggy banks. Good job!

Next, students were once again able to get to speak with the school staff to get Loveland teachers to recognize our program.

Finally, we would like to inform you that now we are at $1435.11!

Thank You Bracelet Team!

We would like to thank the LIS Bracelet Team for their generous donation today, earned by selling their craft!  Thank you to the following students:  Claire Hasenoehrl, Nick Engel, Mackenzie Talbott, Margret Eilert, Paige Nash, and Ella Richards--way to share your talent for a good cause!

YOU TUBE!!!!

We are encouraging those with technological, musical, or entertainment talent to make YOU TUBE commercials for our fundraiser!!  We'll link them directly to our blog and to the Facebook fan page...you could save Haitian children and be famous at the same time--how cool!  Just make your commercial and email the link to Madame Pecsok at: pecsokhi@lovelandschools.org.

Breakfast Compliments of Pecsok Chiropractic!

This morning, after another wonderful presentation--this time to the LIS staff--the 40 courageous students who voluntarily got up two mornings in a row enjoyed a breakfast, compliments of Pecsok Chiropractic (Madame Pecsok's husband)!  It was fun and a great way to celebrate a job well done.  Their passion, enthusiasm, hope, and dedication to this fundraiser came through with every word and we are so proud of their efforts!  Keep up the good work!!

And THEN.......3rd bell arrived and wanted to enjoy the rest of the fruit while doing our morning fundraising planning--nutrition with enthusiasm!  They deserve the treat after working so diligently all week long--GO TEAM (and thank you, Dr. Pecsok!)!!
